How Does Microdermabrasion work?
First let’s start off with the definition of microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is simply a non-invasive process that helps to reduce the dead skin, while also improving overall cell regeneration. Paring this process with a facial is great and helps get the benefits out. However, we do not recommend pairing a microdermabrasion with your facial treatment every time. Once every couple months will suffice.
Microdermabrasion is one of the more common skincare treatments available at Red Hot Spa on Long Island, New York. Our licensed skin care professionals will take care of you and make sure it looks great. During the appointment, we make you as comfortable as possible. In general, we spray gently onto your face and may even sand away some of the outer layer of your skin in certain area. And at the end of the treatment, we use a moisturizer and apply it to your skin.

Different Ways To Proceed With Microdermabrasion
When it comes to the procedure, there are a few different ways to perform microdermabrasion on a patient. And that may depend on the specific device used. Let’s take a look at some of these procedures now.
Diamond-Tip Handpiece
A diamond-tip handpiece gently exfoliates the dead cells in the skin. While exfoliating, this handpiece will also suction them off almost immediately. Overall, the depth of the abrasion may be affected by the pressure that is applied on the handpiece. How long the suction is allowed to remain on the skin also affects the depth of abrasion.
Microdermabrasion using a diamond-tip handpiece is typically used on more sensitive facial areas, like when you need to be close to the eyes.
Crystal Microdermabrasion
Crystal microdermabrasion uses a crystal-emitting handpiece, which gently sprays on fine crystals to rub away rough, outer layers of the skin. And the dead skin cells are suctioned away almost immediately. Aluminum oxide and sodium bicarbonate are two of the more common different types of crystals that get used during this type of procedure.
Hydradermabrasion
Lastly we get to hydradermabrasion, which in the world of microdermabrasion is one of the newer methods out there. This process involves combining simultaneous crystal-free exfoliation and infusion of products into your skin. Hydradermabrasion is great at stimulating collagen production and can maximize the blood flow to your skin. Keeping your face looking vibrant and youthful.
Side Effects of Microdermabrasion
As with any treatment, there are some side effects when you get a microdermabrasion procedure. Some of the more common side effects are:
- mild tenderness
- swelling
- redness
For the most part, these minor side effects will go away in just a few hours after the treatment. Depending on your skin treatment and regiment, we may advise you to use a moisturizer to minimize any potential dry and flaky skin.
Minor bruising also may occur, which is due to the suction process during the treatment.
